Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself.

 1 Samuel 18:1 Words cannot express the value of finding a good and true friend.  You don’t find that person by dumming down your beliefs but by living up to your beliefs.  Real friendships are welded around respected beliefs, not just behavior.   That shared respect and belief is going to lead to even greater things.  Make the whole process easier by just being what you believe.

Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

 1 Samuel 17:58

It’s not who knows you but Who you know.  You can’t let offense operate your life or you’ll get nowhere fast.  King Sual didn’t even remember the guy who had gotten through all those dark experiences before, but that didn’t matter. David would be remembered for what God did through him.  That’s what you want to be remembered for and that is the person people want to remember.  When God advances you, no one can take that advancement away because it’s not just good for you but for everyone around you.

² The men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted and pursued the Philistines as far as the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the slain Philistines lay along the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron. ⁵³ The sons of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines and plundered their camps

It’s amazing what one act of faith can do for the people around you.  We’re called to be light in this world, walking out the will of God in our every day lives.  God reveals His presence, power and passion through those who will live by faith in His word.  When the believer succeeds, it creates believers who succeed.  Be the light today.  Live out what you believe in.  If you’re following God, everyone around you will benefit.

Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and he struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David’s hand. ⁵¹ Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

 1 Samuel 17:50-51

Once you slay your enemy, all sorts of opportunities come into your sight.  David took Goliath’s own sword and chopped off the giant’s head.  Make sure your enemy is truly defeated and dead.  A wounded enemy can still think and talk.  But when the head is off, the army flees.  Some of us never take the head off of our enemy and we continue to struggle with temptations and terrorism.  Let God have the complete victory in your life.  Do not be afraid of the battle and ending it.

And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the ground.

 1 Samuel 17:49

Use what you have and do what you know, what God has spoken and shown you.  Don’t reach into somebody else’s bag, reach into your bag and if you don’t have one, get one.  If you have nothing in your bag, start filling it today.  One reason I’m a Christian believer is because the God life works.  Goliath found that out the hard way and when it was to late.  Fill your bag with God things.

Then it happened when the Philistine rose and came and drew near to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the ground.

Don’t procrastinate, it gives your enemy power over the moment.  Believe and run to the battle.  And don’t doubt your weapons, that only hurts your cause.  And believe the One who loves you, chose you, sent you.  Know what you believe and know how to live out what you believe in and watch your giants fall.  God’s word is a rock to stand on, a light to shine, and a sword to weld and you’ll always find God hand in the middle of His word.

This day the LORD will deliver you up into my hands, and I will strike you down and remove your head from you. And I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, ⁴⁷ and that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD’s and He will give you into our hands.”

 1 Samuel 17:46-47

The Lord takes care of His business and when you and I talk about it, it’s not threatening, it’s truth.  However, it’s threatening for the enemy to hear the believer speak the truth.  Want to make like easier?  Learn to speak the truth and not threats.

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.

 1 Samuel 17:45

There’s no need for threats when you know who you are in Christ and how it’s all going down in His power.  Threats are for the terrified.  When you walk in the name of the Lord, the seen and the unseen are put on notice. David wasn’t just using God’s name, he was walking in the name of the Lord and working in the name of the Lord.  When you operate in the name of the Lord, there’s no need for threats, just a testimony of who you serve.

Then the Philistine came on and approached David, with the shield-bearer in front of him. ⁴² When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, with a handsome appearance. ⁴³ The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. ⁴⁴ The Philistine also said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field.”

Stand firm in who God made you to be.  You have His love, His words, and His promises.  People often mock what they don’t understand, and it’s to their distress.  Goliath had the eyes of man, but David had the eyes of God.  People who must use threats are usually captured by their own terror.  Stand firm with Jesus.

He took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.

 1 Samuel 17:40

David came as a shepherd and he went as a shepherd.  David picked up his staff and his sling coming to work as a shepherd and going to work as a shepherd.  When your moment comes, don’t doubt yourself and try to be someone you’re not.  David went out to meet Goliath as a shepherd but he wasn’t there to kill Goliath, he was there to shepherd God’s people. Don’t try to be what others want you to be.  Be who God called you to be and do what God wants you to do.  There are no giants bigger than God who lives in you.
